First aid for snake bites

When someone gets bitten by a venomous snake the first thing to do is to make sure the person is kept calm. See if you can identify the snake. Do not attempt to catch it unless you know what you are doing. Here are a couple of things to do to help the victim.

  1. Keep the victim calm. Assure him/her and make sure they are comfortable.
  2. Do not allow the victim to move as far as reasonably possible. Carry him/her if you have to. This will keep the heart rate down and slow the spread of venom in the body.
  3. Carefully and very gently apply a bandage to the bite area. Do not make it too tight and do not remove it unless medical help is at hand.
  4. Apply a splint to the whole limb to keep it from moving.
  5. Get medical help as quickly as possible.

Things not to do:

  1. Do not cut the bite area.
  2. Do not attempt to suck out the venom. Regardless of what some movie or sucker told you.
  3. Do not let the victim eat or drink anything. Not even medication, unless medical personnel give permission.
  4. Do not apply a tourniquet or any similar type of narrow bands. It is not effective.
