IDENTIFYING DANGEROUS SNAKES IN ASIA
(CONT..)
KING COBRA
(Ophiophagus Hannah)

Location: Found in
Thailand, China, Malaysia , and Philippines
Identification: This is the largest venomous snake. Uniformly
olive, brown, or green with ring like cross bands of black. Average
length of about 4m. Can be longer. A big scary sucker indeed.
Spreads a large hood characteristic of cobras.
Characteristics: This snake does feed on other snakes. But it
seems to stay away from other venomous snakes. Some say its
intelligence but I say it is chicken. If this snake bites you it
injects enough venom to kill. You will need medical help or you will
die. Likes forest areas.
KRAIT
(Bungarus caeruleus)
Location: Found in India,
Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.
Identification: Black or bluish-black with white narrow cross
bands and a narrow head. On average about 1 m in length.
Characteristics: Likes to visit people’s shelters and crawl
up close. Its venom is extremely potent. More than that of cobras.
RUSSELL'S VIPER
(Daboia russellii )

Location: Sri Lanka,
south China, India, Malaysia, Sumatra and surrounding islands
Identification: brown body with three rows of dark brown or
black splotches bordered with white or yellow extending its entire
length. About 1.5m in length on average.
Characteristics: Responsible for more snake bite related
deaths that any other snake. Commonly found around human settlements
and not shy to attack and bite. It recoils its head and will hiss
when ready to attack and strike with remarkable fast speed. Do not
underestimate this snake. It is aggressive and will bite.
